Welcome to the Kinderdijk Mill Area. Kinderdijk is one of the cultural-historical objects that UNESCO placed on the World Heritage List in 1997. This means that the mill area is of international inportance and is registered as a protected area. The Kinderdijk-Elshout mill erea consists of a system of waterways. catch-water basins and mills that jointly drain the Alblasserwaard into the river Lek. Kinderdijk is a good example of the way in which water management is carefully organised in the low countries. The mills and waterways form a network that makes it possible to manage the water in the area. This began in a simple form in the Middle Ages already and developed further and further over the centuries. The area contains all kinds of elements from past times, such as dikes, catch-water basins, well-preserved mills, and their buildings and grounds. The open area,The open area, which is necessary to make good use of the wind, is largely original. Octagonal thatched mill. Built in 1740. Located at Boezemkade. Intended for draining the Nieuw-Lekkerland polder. - Mill 18. The Small or Low Mill of the Nieuw-Lekkerland polder.
